Relay For Life is an event hosted by the American Cancer Society. It now takes place in over 20 countries across the globe. The goal at each event is to raise money to help fight and eliminate cancer. The money that is raised goes to cancer research and also supports families of people fighting a battle with cancer.
Relay For Life annually earns over 400 million dollars.The amount of research and financial support that this money supplies is groundbreaking. 20 years ago when someone found out they had cancer it was usually too late to really stop it. Now, thanks to Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society they have supplied ways such as annual testing to catch cancer in its earliest stages and surgically remove it before chemo is even necessary. According to the American Cancer society, in 2015 there was over 500,000 deaths due to cancer in America alone. Surprisingly this is a significant decrease from the early 2000’s in America.
The most important part of battling cancer is never giving up. “When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this: you haven’t.” -Thomas Edison. This quote is important to the cause because although we have not found a cure yet, doesn’t mean nobody every will. Chi Beta loves participating in Relay For Life at Texas State. This year Chi Beta was the top fundraiser and we raised over seven thousand dollars. Texas State Raised over 27 thousand dollars. It is truly such an amazing thing to be part of and also very fun. At the event each organization has a camp site, you can participate in games and competitions, win prizes, get free food, and have several ceremonies honoring cancer patience, their families, their friends, and their caretakers.
